Enyimba FC, one of Nigeria’s flag bearers at the CAF Champions League, will have to double their efforts if they are to progress in the competition having only secured a slim 1-0 win over Smouha SC of Egypt in their first round first leg tie played in Aba on Sunday.
Despite playing at home in front of its vociferous supporters in Aba, Enyimba found it quite difficult to break the Egyptian club who virtually came with an intention to play draw.
However, it took the introduction of Raphael Boumsong, who scored a goal at the 55th minute for Enyimba to secure the slim win.
The Cameroonian striker was brought in at the start of the second half and he justified his coming in with the 55th goal which is the only advantage Enyimba will be taking into the second leg coming up in a fortnight in Alexandria, Egypt.
Enyimba, who were knocked out in the same stage last season, will take some solace in the knowledge that the Egyptians managed only two shots on target throughout the game in Aba, showing just why they had scored only one goal in three CAF Champions League games.
A draw of any kind in the second leg will be enough to see Enyimba through to the next phase of Africa’s biggest club competition.
