The 2014/15 Glo Nigeria Premier League season will get underway in Port Harcourt later today with two matches on the cards to set the ball rolling.
Action is returning to the elite division after over three months of inactivity and the question on the lips of many is whether Kano Pillars who have won the league for the past three years will continue their dominance on the domestic scene.
Sharks FC who finished 13th last season will be hosting Sunshine Stars in the League’s curtain raiser on Saturday. Interestingly, both sides have had their fair shares of troubles during the off-season.
Sharks FC were in the news for all the bad reasons in the past weeks after the reported attack on their coach, Gbenga Ogunbote, by a section of the club’s fans and for Sunshine Stars, the allegation of corrupt activities was levelled against the club’s management.
Both teams would definitely want to get the off-the-pitch distractions away from their minds as they target starting the season on a bright note.
Meanwhile, Dolphins FC will be taking on newly promoted Kwara United in the other opening day fixture and the Coach Stanley Eguma tutored side are itching for the best possible start even as they use the tie to get more prepared for their CAF Confederation Cup assignment.
With the Heartland Vs Kano Pillars game already postponed indefinitely following Thursday’s robbery incident, seven other games will be taking place in the opening weekend of the Nigeria League.
Some of the interesting pairings will see Enyimba confronting their neighbours, Akwa United in Aba and some have predicted an explosive battle.
Coach Zachary Baraje who was fired by Enyimba last season now handles Akwa United and the veteran Coach will be keen to hurt his former employer.
Enyimba finished runners-up last season and will aim to go a step further this season, while Akwa United barely beat the drop by finishing 16th on the league table.
A big attraction in the Aba game is the expected return to action of Nigeria league all-time record top goal scorer Mfon Udoh who failed in his bid to get a move abroad in the last transfer window.
In a chat with PREMIUM TIMES, Mfon stated that he is working hard to let people see his last season’s performance was no fluke.
“Yes, I want to continue from where I stopped last season, I hope I can even do more for my club, Enyimba,” Mfon stated.
In Bauchi, it will be a battle between newly promoted sides as Wikki Tourists host 3SC. Both teams served a glimpse of what to expect at the recent NNL Super 4 in Ilorin where 3SC won 4-3 via penalties after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time. It is yet to be seen how the weekend game will pan out.
