Reps move to probe use of Hiace buses after Bayelsa auto crash deaths

The House of Representatives on Thursday mandated its Committee on Land Transport to investigate the use of Hiace buses for commercial transportation.

The committee is to carry out the function in conjunction with other committees that oversight functions of Standards Organization of Nigeria.

Stella Dorgu (Bayelsa-PDP), who moved the motion, expressed concern over incessant accidents associated with such buses in the country.

She added that many buses often burst into flames in the event of accident resulting in deaths.

Ms. Dorgu added that the investigation became imperative due the report of the World Health Oganisation on “Road Safety in African Region.”

According to her, the report states that Nigeria accounts for 33.7 per cent per 100,000 deaths on the roads every year in the African region.

The law maker cited the recent road accident in Bayelsa that led to the death of some prominent female politicians from the state to buttress her point.

She said that the politicians were burnt to death when their vehicles were involved in multiple crashes on the East-West road, Ahoada, Rivers.

“The road, which is under construction, has claimed the lives of many Nigerians on various occasions including Mrs. Imari Oba (mother of First Lady, Patience Jonathan) on July 23, 2013.

“Unnamed women and children burnt beyond recognition on 15 Nov. 15, 2013 and seven other Nigerians were killed in another vehicle crash on the road on Dec. 26, 2013.”

The Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, referred the matter to the Committee on Federal Road Safety Commission for further legislative inputs.

So if your fellow female politicians had not been lost to this terrible accident, you would not have moved the motion to investigate the suitability or otherwise of Toyota Hiace buses and similar models for inter-city transportation? Sad you lost your friends in that accident but do you now want to pour sand into the garri of numerous transporters, who have invested billions and their employees whose livelihoods depend on this sector? Why don’t you mandate your F.G. agencies to investigate what is the cause of the accident with respect to the drivers and status of the vehicles involved in the accident?

The woman could be high on weeds and shepe. Haice Bus is used worldwide and if there is any decifiencey, Toyota could have recalled that brand.

Thier investigation should be directed to causes of Road Accidents in Nigeria which every Nigeria knows the first two causes; Government irresponsiblity in maintaning Nigerian Roads which accounts for high maintenance cost of vehicles which Nigerains could not afford thereby rendering our vehicles non road worthy and also direct cause of accident. The second casue among others is “bad road users’ habit”

      • Uffot

For this particular road which I know very well – irresponsible drivers, over speeding. Road is in very good condition, so they divide distance with time and let go. Why doesn’t FRSC which has office on this road use speed radar to track and trap speeders? Why is there NO SINGLE speed warning on this road, and virtually all Nigerian roads?
We are a most perculiar people (33.7% per 100,000 does not exist)

        • Bidemi Lukman

All you have mentioned is part of what this woman should raise for debate in the house not Haiace Bus

  • dubya

Our politicians are so self centered that they will never lift a finger to pass legislation or an investigation that does not directly impact them. The article stated that the vehicle was involved in multiple accidents on a bad road. Instead of pointing the finger at the owner of the road, they are chasing after Toyota. Is it Toyota’s fault that you keep your roads in states of disrepair or drive recklessly as most of these party drivers do.

    • djay

Is it the first time a Toyota Hiace bus will have an accident?

    • bib

Thank you. They don’t want to blame GEJ dividends-bad FG roads.

You really must be a Clown for thriving in frivolities while serious urgent national issues are at stake.
The House of Rep. has just directed its committee to look into the possibility or otherwise of the use of the Hiace bus.
This is another avenue of making billionaires out of some clown. Pity!
Please, is the picture above, one of the crash victims? If its so, my sympathy definitely goes to the husband of this damsel of beauty. Waoh!!! Wonders shall never end!
