Yakubu Aiyegbeni happy with first Reading goal

Nigerian striker, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, is in a happy mood after his heroic strike ensured that his new club Reading FC are through to the quarter finals of the FA Cup in England.

Aiyegbeni, who joined Reading on a free transfer from Qatar, came from the bench to score in the 82nd minute, barely 10 minutes after he came on as a substitute.

The 32-year old Nigerian striker said after Saturday’s game that he was desperate to get off the mark and quite pleased that he has now opened his goals account with Reading.

He told BBC Sport: “I was desperate to go on, I told our manager that I wanted to go on. Derby manager Steve McClaren pulled me back on the touchline and joked with me telling me ‘don’t do it, don’t go on and score’, but I did it, I did my job.

“I never wrote it off coming back to England, never say never. Reading gave me the chance to come back so I’m happy to be here.”

Reading have never won the FA Cup in their history, but have reached the quarter-finals for the third time in six seasons, the club will hope more goals from Aiyegbeni can make them create a new history.
