American Tennis star, Serena Williams, showed superior firepower on Saturday to win the 2015 Australian Open Women’s title after beating Russian, Maria Sharapova, in a thrilling final match.
Serena who lost just two sets in previous games, defeated Sharapova in two straight sets; 6-3 7-6 7-5 to win her sixth Australian Open title and an amazing 19th Grand Slam title.
After Saturday’s defeat, Sharapova will feel yet a little bit undone having failed to get past the 33-year old Serena who has always emerged victorious in all their previous meetings since 2004.
Expectedly, Serena was excited after winning the title and confessed she is overwhelmed by the successes recorded in her tennis career.
“In the end I was able to come through,” she said after her victory. “Growing up, I wasn’t the richest, but I had a rich family in spirit. Standing here with 19 championships is something I never thought would happen. I went on a court just with a ball and a racket and with a hope.”
