The hosts, Equatorial Guinea, and relatively less-fancied Congo are through to the quarter finals of the ongoing Africa Cup Nations Cup following the victories recorded by both teams on Sunday.
Congo beat Burkina Faso 2-1 to send last year’s finalist packing. It was Thievy Bifouma and Fabrice Ondama N’Guessi that got the goals for the Red Devils and despite Aristide Bance scoring in the 86th minute for Burkina Faso it was not enough to save the Stallions from crashing out.
In the other game of the day, Equatorial Guinea beat Gabon 2-0 in front of a jubilant Bata crowd to reach the last eight of the tournament.
Though the hosts created very little chances, they finally shot into the lead 10 minutes into the second half when Gabon’s Lloyd Palun fouled Javier Balboa in the box and a penalty kick was awarded.
Balboa took the penalty himself and made no mistake from 12 yards to send the crowd into raptures.
While Gabon were fighting hard for an equaliser, they had their hopes extinguished when Salvador Edu scrambled home from close range with just four minutes left on the clock.
The goal sparked a pitch invasion from the delirious supporters who could not curtail the joy of seeing their team progress.
With this Equatorial Guinea, who finish second in Group A behind Congo, remain unbeaten in the tournament after drawing their opening two games.
