The national under-20 male football team, the Flying Eagles, on Wednesday in Kaduna whipped Nigeria National League, NNL, clubside Spotlight Football Club of Katsina 3-1 in a friendly match.
The match was played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in front of a handful of spectators.
Akinjide Idowu opened scoring for the Flying Eagles in the 42nd minute, after an assist from Taiwo Awoniyi.
Izu Omego scored the second goal for the Flying Eagles after a free-kick at the edge of the penalty box in the 52nd minute.
Spotlight pulled a goal back in the 62nd minute from the penalty kick spot, after Zaharadeen Bello committed a foul.
Midfielder Obinna Nwobodo of Rangers International made it 3-1 for the Flying Eagles five minutes later.
Speaking shortly after the match, Bashir Sadauki, the Chief Coach of Spotlight FC, said he was happy his boys played against experienced players in their build-up for the NNL season.
He said the match was also to test their new players and expose them to more experienced teams, saying this has shown in their performance so far.
Spotlight FC have played 11 friendlies in preparation for the 2014/2015 NNL season, winning six, losing two and drawing three.
“With this match played, I can see where we are lacking and where we need to work upon before the league commences, so as to get good results,” Mr. Sadauki said.
Also speaking, Manu Garba, the Head Coach of the Flying Eagles, said his players’ performance was inspiring and commendable.
He said he was confident that his players would perform well at the forthcoming 2015 African Youth Championship, AYC.
“The performance was commendable, and I believe we will do better during the upcoming tournament and we hope to make it to the final,” Mr. Garba said.
Since resuming camp in Kaduna late last year, the Flying Eagles have played six matches, scoring 37 goals and conceding three.
The Flying Eagles are also due to take on Nigerian champions Kano Pillars in another test game by the weekend in Kaduna.
