Manchester United’s good run of form at their Old Trafford home ground was punctured on Sunday as Southampton piped the Red Devils 0-1 in the final game of the week in the English Premier League.
A 70th minute strike from Dusan Tadic was all that was required by the visitors to cart away the three points on offer.
After a gritty first half display by both sides in which United had the better chances, Southampton finally went in front after a neat passing move on the edge of the box in which Graziano Pelle hit the post with a low strike, but substitute Dusan Tadic was at hand to roll in the rebound with a tidy finish.
United, who were understandably desperate for an equaliser, probed forward at every opportunity, coming close in the 77th minute when Daley Blind’s cross from the left almost caught Fraser Forster out, before Juan Mata shot wide moments later.
Southampton, however, were able to see the game out and secure three well-earned points swap places with Red Devils to now occupy third place while United drop to fourth.
Earlier in the day, Alexis Sanchez put up another Man-of-match display as Arsenal romped to a 3-0 win over Stoke City at the Emirates stadium.
The Chilean hit a brace after he had provided an assist for Frenchman Laurent Koscielny as Arsenal put up another commanding performance that takes them closer to the top-four spot.
Unfortunately, Nigerian forward Victor Moses who was expected to play a part in the Arsenal game watched for 90 mins on the bench.
