It was another thrilling weekend of football across the globe and Nigerian players in their own little way contributed their bits and pieces.
This week, PREMIUM TIMES’ review of Nigerian players plying their trade abroad will start from Eastern Europe – Russia to be precise – where Super Eagles winger, Ahmed Musa, turned out the hero in the Moscow derby scoring the only goal that saw CSKA Moscow defeat fierce City rival, Lokomotiv Moscow, 1-0.
Musa was also on target for CSKA in the UEFA Champions League last Wednesday, scoring the consolatory goal in the 5-1 defeat suffered in the hands of Roma.
While Musa was not the only Nigerian player that scored over the weekend, his effort in the tough Moscow derby earned him the Star of the week accolade.
Away from Russia, next stop will be the EPL where a couple of Nigerian players were called up for action by their respective teams.
John Mikel Obi (Chelsea): Mikel played a part in the Super Sunday clash against Manchester City as he was called upon by Coach Jose Mourinho to replace Willan. The Nigerian midfilder was rated above average in the game which ended 1-1 at the Etihad Stadium.
Victor Moses,(Stoke City): Super Eagles forward, Victor Moses played for 79 minutes for Stoke City as they were forced to a 2-2 draw by host, Queens Park Rangers, in an EPL game on Saturday.
The Nigerian star did have a good game as he contributed to the two goals scored by the Potters. With improved performances like this, Moses might be returning to top form ahead of Nigeria’s crucial AFCON qualifying games next month.
Brown Ideye, Victor Anichebe (Westbrom): West Brom over the weekend secured their first win of the season after defeating Tottenham Hotspurs 1-0 away from home. The Nigerian duo of Victor Anichebe and Brown Ideye had very little contribution to the crucial result as the latter enjoyed just a cameo role and the former was benched all throughout.
Kenneth Omeruo (Middlesbrough): Nigerian defender Kenneth Omeruo played all 90 minutes for Middlesbrough as they thrashed Brentford 4-0 at the Riverside. Omeruo has played four games so far this season in the lower division in the Championships.
Shola Ameobi (Gaziantep BB): Nigerian international striker, Shola Ameobi, scored his first goal for his Turkish second division team Gaziantep BB in Friday’s 1-1 draw against Adanaspor.
Gaziantep BB are now 11th on an 18-team league table with three points from as many games.
Emmanuel Emenike (Fenerbahce): The goals drought for the Nigerian striker continued even though his team Fenerbahce scraped a 1-0 win over Gaziantepspor. Sunday’s barren outing means Emenike has netted 1 goal in his last 16 games for club and country.
Godfrey Oboabona (Rizespor): Nigerian defender Godfrey Oboabona was an unused substitute for Rizespor who lost 2-0 away to Mersin İdmanyurdu on Sunday. He is yet to feature this season.
Ogenyi Onazi (SS Lazio): Midfielder Ogenyi Onazi was yet again benched for 90 minutes in Lazio’ away to Genoa on Sunday. Onazi is yet to feature for his team in the Serie A this season.
Nnamdi Oduamadi (Crotone): Winger Nnamdi Oduamadi came off the substitute’s bench in the 69th minute to score his first Serie B goal of the season for Crotone who defeated Bologna 2-0 to earn their first win of the season..
Vincent Enyeama (Lille): Goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama kept his fourth clean sheet of the season in goal for Lille in their barren draw against Montpellier. While it was good for Enyeama not to concede any goal, not getting all three points in Sunday’s game saw Lille vacating the number one spot in the Ligue 1
Elderson Echiejile (AS Monaco): Just back in full training with his teammates, defender Elderson Echiejile missed Monaco’s lone goal victory against Guingamp.
Chinedu Obasi (Schalke 04): Super Eagles winger Chinedu Obasi played the last eight minutes of Schalke’s 2-2 draw with Eintracht Frankfurt in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
Anthony Ujah (Cologne): Striker Anthony Ujah played for 75 minutes before been hurled off in Cologne’s derby at home to Borussia Monchengladbach.
Efe Ambrose (Celtic): Defender Efe Ambrose played all 90 minutes for Celtic who forced Motherwell to a 1-1 draw. It was his sixth start of the SPL.
Bartholomew Ogbeche (Cambuur): Striker Bartholomew Ogbeche played for 63 minutes in Cambuur’s 4-0 loss away to PSV at the Philips Stadium on Sunday.
Ogbeche who has scored twice this season has made six Eredivise appearances this season.
Ikechukwu Uche (Villareal): There was a huge relief to see Nigerian striker IK Uche return to Villareal’s starting line up after a fast recovery from the knock that saw him replaced three minutes after notching the equaliser in Thursday’s Europa League clash away to Borussia Monchengladbach at the Borussia Park. Though Uche did not score, his team came from behind to secure a 4-2 win.
Ramon Azeez (Almeria): Nigerian midfielder, Ramon Azeez, played his first game of the season for Almeria who picked up their first win of the new season by beating Real Sociedad at the Estadio Anoeta for the first time in their history.
