FIFA Ranking: Algeria emerges Africa’s best team to World Cup

Super Eagles of Nigeria

Nigeria retains its 44th position in the World

The highest ranked African team going to the Brazil 2014 World Cup will be Algeria as the Desert Foxes moved up two places to the 22nd spot on the latest FIFA rankings released Thursday by the world football governing body.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be however be heading to the Mundial as Africa’s sixth best team having remained static in the 44th position in the June edition of the monthly ranking.

The non-movement of the African champions may be as a result of their not too impressive friendly match results recorded against Scotland and Greece. The matches ended in 2-2 and 0-0 stalemates respectively.

Meanwhile, hitherto Africa’s highest ranked team, the Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire dropped two places to become tied in 23rd spot with Denmark.

The other two teams going to the World Cup as Africa’s flag bearers, Ghana and Cameroon, are ranked 3rd and 10th on the continent respectively.

On the broader scale, the leading duo of Spain and Germany remain unchanged. Brazil will start the tournament in third place, having leapfrogged Portugal, while Argentina (5th) and Switzerland (6th,) have each climbed two places. England (10th, up 1) have returned to the top ten at the expense of Greece (12th, down 2).
