Brazil 2014: Onigbinde, Chukwu, Amodu, others react to Nigeria’s list

Keshi named his 23 players for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Some former coaches of the Nigeria Super Eagles have reacted to the 23-man list released by current coach, Stephen Keshi, for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The reactions were mixed but with best wishes to Mr. Keshi and Nigerians for a successful outing at the World Cup.

Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday, Festus Onigbinde, who coached the Super Eagles at the 2002 World Cup in Japan/Korea, said he believed Keshi knew what he was doing and the people he needed to get to work for him.

Onigbinde also urged Nigerians to wish Keshi all the best of luck.

“Well, I saw the list early this morning and I believe the only person who knows how he wants his team to play in Brazil is Keshi. Let’s wish him all the best in his decision.

“He knows who and who he has in his plans to execute his programmes so all I can ask Nigerians to do is to wish him all the best,” he said.

Another former head coach of the Super Eagles, Christian Chukwu, who handled the team from 2002 to 2006, told PREMIUM TIMES that Keshi chose guys that would give him 100 per cent loyalty and performance.

“The coach stays with, eats and sees the boys every day. He spends time with them and he’s in a better position to know the player that will give him the needed services.

“Everybody can’t be on the list. I believe the 23 men are those he believes will give him 100 per cent loyalty and performance. We should allow him to work. The dropped seven players should cooperate with him. There’s time for everything. Other World Cups are coming. The Cup of Nations is around the corner as well,” Chukwu said.

The head coach of the Super Falcons, Edwin Okon, commended Keshi, saying it is the best list so far.

“It is the best list as far as I’m concerned. He knows the best and what he wants and those who will make the nation proud. Before that list came out, he must have liaised with his technical crew. Let’s leave sentiments aside, it’s a good list,” Okon told PREMIUM TIMES.

A former coach of the Super Falcons, Kadiri Ikhana, also concurred that it was a good list.

“I think it’s a perfect list. I think he has taken the right decisions and he did not favour anybody. People should not think (Joseph) Yobo or Osaze (Odemwingie) made the list because of pressure. I think it is not pressure. They have realised that a leader is always a leader and I believe we will make a good team in Nigeria,” Ikhana said.

Shuaibu Amodu, who coached the Super Eagles at the 2010 African Cup of Nations, AFCON, however, declined commenting on the list but wished Keshi all the best.

“I won’t be the first person not to comment. I’m too strategic to say anything about the national team of Nigeria. However, I’m with the team in spirit and physically. I wish my colleague handling the team all the best,” he said.

The squad list for the 2014 FIFA World Cup was released at midnight on Tuesday. Seven players from the 30-man provisional list were dropped. They include Sunday Mba, Ejike Uzoenyi, Joel Obi, Nnamdi Oduamadi, Daniel Akpeyi, Nosa Igiebor and Obinna Nsofor .

The World Cup bound squad will play their first match together on Tuesday night in the U.S. against Greece in a pre-World Cup friendly match.
