“I have served this country as a player for years, and as a coach; and nobody will come one day and say I have received money from him.”
The head coach of the Golden Eaglets, Emmanuel Amuneke, has denied any involvement in the sale of young Nigerian players to foreign clubs.
Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES in Abuja, the former Super Eagles winger said the allegations that he is involved in the sale of youth team players is false.
“I don’t sell players, I’m a coach,” Amuneke, a 1994 Nations Cup winner, said. “Those that know whom I am know who I am, so I will not involve myself in selling players, or taking money from anybody.
“I have served this country as a player for years, and as a coach; and nobody will come one day and say I have received money from him.”
Amuneke, who was involved in the controversy that surrounded the transfer of former U17 forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, said people misinterpret his uprightness on issues.
“I don’t deceive people. The only thing is I tell the truth and people won’t like us because they won’t like to hear the truth; that is why they are on my case,” he said.
Speaking about the ongoing screening in the Flying Eagles camp, the coach assured that everything was going on as scheduled.
“Everything is going on well, it is calm and it is very okay in camp.
“We are still on the selection process, we are still screening. We’ve seen some people, we still expect to see more people. Screening and selection is not over yet, it is a continuous process,” he added.
The National U17 team, Golden Eaglets, will participate in this year’s six nation sub-regional West African football tournament in Togo between Aril 19 and 27.
Nigeria is in Group B of the tournament alongside Niger and Mali.
Amuneke said the screening of players will continue after the Togo tournament.
“Screening is still on. When we get back from the tournament in Togo, we will continue with the selection process and see if we can see people that will add value to the team.”
