UEFA Champions League: Bayern defeat Arsenal, Milan lose

The two away teams won their matches.

Arsenal are in a tight situation of progressing in the UEFA Champions League after going down to a 0-2 defeat at home against Bayern Munich in their first leg Round of 16 tie at the Emirates on Wednesday night.

The Gunners who played the better part of the thrilling clash with 10-men following the sending off of goalkeeper Wozecnh Schezny in the
38th minute- now have the somewhat difficult task of turning the tables against the reigning European Champions in the second leg billed for the Allianz Arena.

In Wednesday’s clash, Arsenal did enjoy a dominant start as the
Gunners started the game like a house on fire; bombarding the defence of Bayern Munich from all fronts.

The fast start could have paid off for Arsenal as they were awarded a penalty kick for an adjudged rash tackle on Mesut Ozil.

The German international did stand up to take the resultant kick himself but failed to get the ball in the back of the net as Bayern goalkeeper, Manuel Neur, pulled a save to deny Arsenal an early lead.

From then on, the defending champions gradually settled down into the game and began to dominate possession.

Bayern had their own chance to go ahead in the first half when Arjen Robben was fouled in the penalty box by Arsenal’s goalkeeper. The goalkeeper was sent off by the referee. The replacement goalkeeper Fabianski was introduced and Santi Carzola sacrificed.

However, the well taken penalty kick by David Alaba of Bayern hit the bar to the delight of Arsenal fans.

Going into the second half, Bayern Coach Pep Guardiola fashioned a wining strategy for his team; and nine minutes after resumption Toni Kroos fired Bayern into the lead. The goal was the 100th goal of the
season for Bayern. The visitors got a two-goal cushion as substitute Thomas
Muller nodded in another goal deep into the second half.

In the other game in Italy, Atletico Madrid secured a late 1-0 win
over AC Milan to complete an interesting cycle which has seen all the away teams win their first leg round of 16 ties.

Barcelona and PSG were also winners in Tuesday’s game away from home.
