Nigeria Athletics season set for thrilling start in Ijebu-ode

Blessing Okagbare

The one day event starts at 9am and ends by 5pm.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN’ first competition of the year, Over Distance Races and Distance Relays, promises to be competitive and exciting as the best of Nigerian based athletes have registered to participate in the one day event slated for Ijebu-Ode Stadium on Saturday.

As at noon on Friday, over 500 athletes had already registered for the event. AFN Technical Delegate, Yusuf Ali, revealed that more entries are still being expected before the Friday evening deadline for registration.

Mr. Ali posited that the high number of entries could be attributed to the success achieved by the AFN athletes last year at the Youth, Junior and Senior level.

“Honestly, I am highly excited and impressed by the number of entries. For us to record this high number of entries for over-distance is a clear indication that there will be higher number of entries when we start running the Golden League where athletes will run their normal event”.

Mr. Ali also said the success of Blessing Okagbare has created more awareness about track and field and that parents are now encouraging their kids to partake in the sports.

Also expected in Ijebu-Ode on Saturday is the President of AFN, Solomon Ogba, whose company Solid Works is the official sponsor of the event; as well as the recently appointed National Performance Director, Angie Taylor.

The one day event starts at 9 a.m. and ends by 5 p.m.
