Nigeria will play Mexico in the final.
Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets on Tuesday evening confirmed their superiority over Sweden as they tore the Scandinavians apart and romped to a 3-0 win to confirm their place in the final of the ongoing FIFA U 17 World Cup taking place in the United Emirates.
The Eaglets, who could only salvage a 3-3 draw in their earlier game against the Swedes, lived up to their billing as the favourites in the semi-final duel which went down at the Rashid Stadium in Dubai as they scored a goal in the first half and added two more in the second half to set up a final date against reigning champions, Mexico.
One of the revelations in the Nigerian team, Taiwo Awoniyi, set the ball rolling for the three-time world champions as he continued from where he stopped in the quarter finals to score the Eaglets goal of the night in the 21st minute.
Awoniyi’s fourth goal interestingly came off an assist from the usual suspect, Kelechi Ihenacho, whose deft touches accounted for a couple of Nigeria’s goals.
The game stayed at 1-0 through the first and on resumption from the break, the Swedes threatened like they will get an equaliser but that never came for the debutants who actually surprised many to get this far.
It was Okon and Chidera Ezeh who instead increased Nigeria’s tally scoring in the 80th and 81st minute to put Nigeria in good stead to secure a historic fourth FIFA U 17 World Cup title.
