Enyimba and Bayelsa United have same points.
The intense rivalry at the summit of the Glo Nigeria Premier League table continued on Wednesday as Enyimba International returned to the number one position after defeating hard fighting Akwa United 1-0 at the Aba International stadium.
The three points secured from the Week 34 tie pushed Enyimba’s tally to 55 points from 33 games as they still have a game at hand against Kano Pillars this Sunday in Lagos.
The Peoples Elephant though tied on 55 points with Bayelsa United are back on top owing to their superior goals difference, all thanks to their good defensive record that has seen them not concede any goal at home this season.
Winning on Wednesday was not a stroll in the park for the Aba team as they could only rely on the 38minute goal from old war horse, Emeka Nwana, to keep their title aspirations alive.
In Yenegoa, where former table toppers, Bayelsa United, were up against City rivals, Nembe City, it was the later team that got all three points after securing a slim 1-0 victory.
The Yenegoa derby was not without some drama as Chairman of Nembe City, Rumson Baribote, was sent to the stands over his continuous complain of unfair officiating against his team who are currently battling against relegation.
The other two teams in the run for the League title, Kano Pillars and El-kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri, both lost their away ties to Kaduna United and Sharks F C respectively. While Pillars were piped by a lone goal by their host, Warriors had it rough in Port Harcourt losing 3-0
In Warri, Wolves finally shook off their Federation Cup disappointment as Oghenekaro Etebo turned out the hero of the day helping his team to a 3-1 win over Wikki Tourist with his hattrick.
At the Pantami Stadium, Dolphin FC despite their resolute display fell 1-0 to Gombe United.
An 81st minute well taken penalty by Lucky Edjebare made the difference on the night.
Meanwhile, Nasarawa United were three times better than the struggling Shooting Stars team in their League tie played at the Lafia Stadium.
The host defeated 3SC 3-0 to further compound the woes of the relegation threatened Ibadan team
A brace from League’s top scorer, Victor Namo, and another strike from Babatunde Solomon further boosted the chances of survival for the solid miners.
