Ameobi has pledged his loyalty to Nigeria.
Celebrations that Newcastle United striker, Shola Ameobi, is on his way to back to feature for the Super Eagles may have been short-lived as the 31-year-old was dealt an injury low in his club’s pre-season away game in Portugal on Saturday night.
Ameobi, who was listed alongside 19 others by Coach Stephen Keshi for the August 14 Bafana friendly after declaring his availability for national team duties, fell awkwardly on Saturday night after coming on as a second half sub and left the stadium with his arm heavily strapped.
Though Ameobi’s English club is yet to make any statement on the severity or otherwise of the injury suffered by their highly experience striker who incidentally scored the only goal in Saturday’s 3-1 loss, there are fears the injury may derail the anticipated comeback of Ameobi to the new Super Eagles set-up.
Only recently, Ameobi pledged his international future to the Super Eagles, declaring that the clause that prevented him from the Nations Cup, has now been rectified.
The vastly experienced striker was then quoted as saying “I will love to play for Nigeria under Stephen Keshi because he is a good coach, above all I am very proud to be a Nigerian and will always grab the opportunity to don the green white colours of my fatherland.”
Ameobi has been capped just once by Nigeria.
