Toulon Tournament: Flying Eagles risk ouster despite Brazil draw

The team drew 1-1 with Brazil.

Nigeria’s U20 team, the Flying Eagles are all but out from this year’s Toulon Invitational Tournament in France despite battling to a 1-1 draw against Brazil on Tuesday at the Stade Louis Hon in Saint Raphael.

The draw means Nigeria remain without a win after three games having lost and drawn their earlier two games and thus have just two points to stay in 4th place in their 5-team group.

Like in their last game against Belgium that they had to come from behind, the Flying Eagles were again caught on the wrong side when Brazilian striker, Erik Lima’s 39 minute strike put the former world champions ahead.

It was Enugu Rangers man , Alhaji Gero, that again saved Nigeria from defeat as he made up for his first half miss to net in the equaliser early in the second half.

Nigeria with only two points in the kitty have no chance of overtaking Brazil who increased their points haul to 10 after Tuesday’s game.

To scale through the group stage, Coach John Obuh and his team will now need to beat Portugal convincingly and expect that Mexico will not do same against Belgium who have been described as the tournament’s ‘whipping’ boys.

Mexico and Portugal are tied on four points apiece while Belgium sit at the base of the table with just one point.
