Arsenal defeated Wigan 4-1.
English FA Cup Champions, Wigan Athletic, have been relegated from the English Premier League after slumping to a 4-1 defeat in the hands of Champions League ticket chasers, Arsenal FC, at the Emirates on Tuesday night.
The Gunners showed they were in for business as they hit the ground running from the blast of the whistle. Santi Carzola’s diving header in the 6th minute off a cross from Theo Walcott missed target by a whiskers.
German striker, Podolski, soon got Arsenal in the lead in the 11th minute as he latched on with his head from a corner kick from Carzola.
After series of runs in the Arsenal area Wigan were awarded a free kick and it was Shaun Maloney who stood out to take the kick which he expertly curved into the top hand corner in the 45th minute to give the Lactics a deserved equaliser.
Wigan later tried to muscle their way to the front but had a goal adjudged rightly as offside.
Arsenal then soon took over the show scoring three more goals to take the game beyond the ambitious Wigan side.
Walcott, Podolski, and Aaron Ramsey scored in the second half to put Arsenal in good position for the much coveted Champions League ticket.
Wigan, meanwhile, will play in the Championship next season.
