The Nigeria defender faced an attack in his Monday game against Djurgarden.
Nigeria and Mjallby of Sweden defender, Gbenga Arokoyo, was lucky to escape without any form of injury after Monday night’s attack on his team.
The former Kwara United player is, however, still reeling in shock, officials of his Swedish team have revealed.
Arokoyo was in action for Mjalby in the Week 2 clash against Djurgarden; and after his team shot into the lead in the match home, fans were agitated and went beserk.
Angry fans at Djurgarden’s home stadium in Stockholm threw bottles, coins, fruit and other objects onto the field as Mjallby’s players celebrated a goal in the 37th minute.
Television footage showed Arokoyo falling to the ground after an object hit him in the stomach but Mjällby’s sports director, Thomas Andersson Borstam told sverigesradio.se there was no cause for alarm save for the fact that the Nigerian is surprised and shocked about the incidence
“I was on the other side when it happened, but it looked like it rained in things, especially bottles. Then we see how Gbenga collapse,” he said.
“Gbenga Arokoyo escaped without injury, but was shocked after the incident. Gbenga’s in good spirits, a little shocked and surprised. That you will get hit by something from the audience is not something you immediately expect,” said Thomas Andersson Borstam.
Monday’s game was expectedly called off and officials are yet to rule whether there would be a replay or the Arokoyo’s team will be awarded full points from the match.
