AYC: Flying Eagles get consolatory bronze

The Nigerian team defeated Mali to clinch bronze.

After failing in their ambition to successfully defend the title they won last term, the Flying Eagles of Nigeria claimed the bronze medal at the African Youth Championships on Saturday.

The team defeated Mali, 2-1, in the third place match played at Oran.

The victory would pass for revenge after the Nigerian team suffered a 1-0 defeat in the hands of Mali in their first match of the AYC.

A brace from striker Aminu Umar ensured that it was the Flying Eagles and not the Eaglets of Mali who claimed third spot in the competition.

Mali scored a late goal on 87th minute through Tiekoro Keita to make it an interesting end, but it was Nigeria who had the last smile in the battle of the two West African countries.

Nigeria took the lead In the 72nd minute when Aminu Umar reacted quickest to score the opening goal of the match off a rebound from an earlier shot by Ajagun.

Ten minutes later, Umar scored his and Nigeria’s second from the penalty spot.

It Umar who was fouled by Boubacar Diarra as he jumped for a high ball in the box. The striker picked himself up and sent Yirango the wrong way. Mali refused to lie down and mounted a late charge.

On 87th minute, Malian winger, Tiekoro Keita, scored after keeper Usman had spilled a shot. The Flying Eagles, however, hung on to secure the victory.
