AYC: Egypt knocks out Nigeria’s Flying Eagles

Despite the loss, Nigeria will still represent Africa at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Turkey.

The Flying Eagles of Nigeria can no longer defend the Africa Youth Championship title won two years ago in South Africa after they were defeated 2-0 by the Junior Pharaohs of Egypt in one of Tuesday’s semi final games.

The Coach John Obuh-led side could not match the firepower of the young Egyptian team that has won all their matches so far at the ongoing AYC in Algeria.

After the Nigerian side managed to survive the onslaught from their opponents in the first half, the compact young Pharaohs sealed a place in Saturday’s final courtesy of a lovely brace from their ace striker, Mahmoud Kharaba, who found the back of the net in the 47th and 81st minute.

Egypt will now face Ghana who defeated Mali on penalties in the other semi final match.

Nigeria will take consolation in the fact that all the four teams that made it to the semi final will represent Africa at the FIFA U20 World Cup in Turkey.

Despite losing out on the top prize this term, Nigeria still has the highest record of wins having clinched the AYC title a record six times.
