Gallant Arsenal miss out on Champions League quarter final ticket

Bayern Munich qualifies for the quarter final of the Champions League.

For the second year running, it was a near miss for London side, Arsenal, as the 2-0 victory recorded over German giants, Bayern Munich, at the Allianz Arena was inadequate to secure a quarter final berth.

The Gunners were eliminated via the away goal rule as the tie ended 3-3 over two legs; but a porous Arsenal display in the first leg where they lost 3-1 meant the end of the road.

Arsenal’s defeat means no English team will be in the quarter final of the UEFA Champions League for the first time since 1997.

French striker, Oliver Giroud, gave Arsenal the best start they could ever dream of as he put his side ahead as early as the third minute after connecting a cross from Theo Walcott.

Goalkeeper Fabianski did well for Arsenal as he kept a clean sheet on the night after just returning to the first eleven in nearly a year.

Arsenal moved closer to a dream night in the 85th minute when Laurent Koscielny bundled in a goal. The last five minutes remained tense as Arsenal went for the third without success thus bowing out respectfully having tied the aggregate scores at 3-3.

However it was Bayern who went through thanks to the away goals rule.

In the other game Malaga became the third Spanish team to secure a slot in the quarter final of the UEFA Champions League after substitute Roque Santa Cruz came off the bench to head Malaga into the last eight courtesy of a 2-0 home win over 10-man FC Porto.

The on-loan Manchester City striker powered home a 77th minute corner to clinch a 2-1 win on aggregate after Steven Defour saw red for a second bookable offence.

The inspirational Isco had set the Spanish minnows on their way to victory with a sensational curling effort on 43 minutes after a dour opening to the encounter.

The victory means Malaga join the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona in the quarter-finals in what is their debut campaign in Europe elite competition.

Draws for the quarter finals will be conducted on Friday. Real Madrid, Dortmund, Galatasaray, PSG, Barcelona, and Juventus are the other quarter finalists.
