Barcelona’s win against AC Milan last night may have been aided by a higher power.
What does football have in common with the election of a new pope? Nothing might be the natural answer. The Vatican does not have a football team, one may also add.
But an ardent fan of Barcelona Football Club will tell you something entirely different.
With the papal conclave taking place as the same time as Barcelona/AC Milan match, any football buff that has studied Barcelona overtime wouldn’t have approached the match with much optimism for Milan despite its 2-0 drubbing of Barcelona last week.
Here is what history has shown: the Catalan club has a knack of winning its opponents by four goals whenever a conclave to elect a new pope is on. Yes, they have done it not just once but three times now.
On a conclave night, Barcelona’s 4-0 win over Milan yesterday in the Champions League was a done deal signed by “the divine.”
Prior to yesterday’s match, Barcelona have played two games during papal conclaves and the results have been the same: 4-0!
During the 1958 conclave that elected Pope John XXIII, Barca beat their arch-rival Real Madrid 4-0. They repeated the feat during the 1978 conclave that saw the emergence of Pope John Paul II. That time their prey was Las Palma.
Whether they will make it four out of four soon depends on how the voting inside the Sistine chapel goes.
Barca has a La Liga match against Real Vallecano on Sunday.
With the second round of voting by the Cardinals ending in another deadlock, the prayer on every Vallecano fan should be that the smoke from the Sistine Chapel turns white before the match on Sunday or history might just repeat itself for a fourth time.
