FA Cup: Blackburn knocks out Arsenal

Arsenal may end the season trophyless again.

Championship side, Blackburn Rovers, Saturday, stunned Premier League giants, Arsenal, inside the Emirates as they ran away with a lone goal victory to send the Gunners out of this year’s FA Cup.

Before Saturday’s shocking defeat, Arsene Wenger had never lost to lower league opposition in the FA Cup in his 16 years as Arsenal Manager, but the French Coach watched helplessly as his side failed to convert the myriad of chances that came their way while the visitors got a solitary goal out of nothing off the boots of Kazim Richards.

Blackburn thus continued their fairy tale run into the quarter final of this year’s competition where they are yet to concede a goal.

The FA Cup exit effectively means Arsenal chances of ending their eight years trophy drought has got even more difficult as they are already out of the running to win the Premier League title and are regarded as outsiders for the UEFA Champions League.

Arsenal will have themselves to blame after the likes of Gervinho, Diaby and Rosicky all failed to convert the chances that came their way on Saturday as a resolute defensive display by Blackburn saw them have the last laugh.

The late introduction of the trio of Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott and Santi Carzola failed to get any positive bearing on the game as Arsenal now have their season tumbling even as they play host to Bayern Munich in the CAF Champions League on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Danny Shittu and his Millwall teammates continued their fairy tale run in the FA Cup as they secured a quarter-final ticket after defeating non-league side Luton 3-0.
