The Nigerian champions defeated their central African Republic opponent convincingly.

One of Nigeria’s representatives in the CAF Champions League, Kano Pillars, on Saturday got their campaign in the continent’s biggest club football competition on a bright note as they secured a 5-1 win in their first round, first leg game against Olympique de Bangui of Central African Republic.

The game, which took place inside the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, saw the Nigerian League champions hit the ground running from the blast of the whistle; and they were soon rewarded when Bello Kofomata got the first goal in the 15th minute.

The Kano team soon doubled their lead when Ali Nasiru registered his name on the scorer’s sheet after finding the back of the net in the 38th minute and that brought some smiles and relief in the face of Coach Baba Ganaru .

The smiles were however short-lived as the visitors who were not willing to lie low and be ran over pulled a goal back just before the half time break.

Pillars, who before the game had boasted that they would be gunning for a big win so as to make the return leg in a fortnight a mere formality, stepped up their game in the second half and added three more goals to their tally.

Substitute Nofiru Ali netted a brace while Rabiu Aminu scored once thus ensuring that the Nigerian representatives head to the second leg with a comfortable 5-1 win.

Enugu Rangers, the other team representing Nigeria in the Champions League, will be in action on Sunday as they entertain Sporting Príncipe at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium in Enugu.
