Fashola splashes N54.5m on Super Eagles

More gifts for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Newly crowned African champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria, were, Friday, treated to a grand reception by the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fasola in conjunction with Guinness Nigeria PLC where a total of N57 million was doled out to the players, coaches, officials and members of the supporters club.

The Eagles led by Coach Stephen Keshi where, from the Murtala Airport, led to the Ikeja office of Guinness PLC, one of the major sponsors of the team where a mini get-together was held.

At the main reception event which took place at the Banquet Hall, Lagos House, Ikeja, only five of the 23 players were available as other players have since returned to their respective clubs with some even risking varying degrees of punishment for late return.

Governor Fashola, while commending the victorious Eagles, said more work still needs to be done.

He said the bragging right for two years which the victory in South Africa avails the Eagles was inadequate; instead the team’s target should be to dominate the continent for the next decade.

“I will like to congratulate the team for the hard work that brought them this success but as I usually say, hard work only brings need for more hard work,” Mr. Fashola stated.

The sports loving governor then announced the largess to the team.

In his breakdown, Coach Stephen Keshi will get N2.5 million while his immediate assistant, Daniel Amokachi, was given N2 million. The other four assistants were given N1.5 million each.

Captain of the Super Eagles, Joseph Yobo, was given N1.5 million while the other 22 players will get N1 million each.

For the 11 goals scored in South Africa, the Lagos government said they will award N500,000 for each goal totaling N5.5 million.

The back room staff, who hitherto were sidelined in the previous reception were given a combined N15 million to share and the Supporters Club got a N4.5 million donation from Lagos.

The Super Eagles left the Governor’s Office for the Teslim Balogun stadium where more fans caught the glimpse of the trophy and celebrated with the Eagles.
