Togo and Cote d’ Ivoire qualify for AFCON quarter finals
The Elephants of Cote d’ Ivoire and the Hawks of Togo officially completed the list of eight quarter finalist at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations after both teams on Wednesday played draw scores against Algeria and Tunisia respectively.
While the Elephants forced back a 2-2 draw against the Dessert Foxes of Algeria who were already out of contention for a place, Togo played a 1-1 draw against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia who needed an outright win to secure a berth in the next phase.
With Wednesday’s result, the Elephants finished top of Group D with seven points and are confirmed to face the Super Eagles on Sunday at the Royal Baofekeng Stadium in Rustenburg.
Togo finished as runners up in Group D and thus qualify for the quarter finals for the first time in their history. They will now try the Stallions of Burkina Faso for size in Sunday’s other pairing.
In the first set of quarter final matches, the Black Stars of Ghana will be up against giant killers, Cape Verde, while host South Africa have a date with the Eagles of Mali.
Meanwhile a total of 49 goals was scored in the 24 matches of the group phases. There were 11 wins and 13 draws which points to a keen contest at the South Africa 2013 tournament.
There are eight matches left in this year’s edition as the race to win Africa’s top football prize peaks.
