Host South Africa as well as newcomers Cape Verde are through to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations after playing their skin out in the last set of matches in Group A.
South Africa forced a 2-2 draw against the Atlas Lions of Morocco while Cape Verde shocked Angola 2-1 in Sunday’s thrilling Afcon games.
Both South Africa and Cape Verde tied on five points but the host finish tops with a better goal difference than the former Portuguese colony.
In the Cape Verde vs Angola game, the debutantes started on the back foot when the Blue Sharks defender Fernando Neves was in the wrong place at the wrong time as he flicked the ball into his own net to put the Angolans ahead.
Despite the intial setback Cape Verde looked the better side for most part of the game, missing many chances, as they continued to penetrate Angola defense.
Helfden’s 64th minute free kick was punched by Angola goalkeeper and a Cape Verdean could not get close to slot in.
But Fernando Varela got and opportunity and made it count in the 81st minute to equal score line.
But that was not to be the last, as Heldon’s right foot shot went past goalkeeper Luis Mamona João to record a 2-1 win to see Cape Verde advance to the quarter finals.
South Africa will now face the runners up in Group B while Cape Verde plays the winners of the group.
