As part of ongoing reforms in the sports sector, the Minister of Sports and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, NSC, Bolaji Abdullahi, has ordered all Secretaries of the Sport Federations to prepare their handover notes ahead of their redeployment to the Commission.
In a statement by his media aide, Julius Ogunro, on Monday, the minister said “as part of this reform, the Federations will now have the power to appoint their own Secretaries, thereby granting them greater autonomy.”
The statement said the NSC will, however, set the guidelines for the appointment of the secretaries.
“Similarly, the NSC is developing eligibility guidelines that will guide elections and appointments into the Boards of these Federations,” the statement noted.
While explaining further on the basis for the re-deployment, Mr. Ogunro told PREMIUM TIMES that “the secretaries are part of the National Sport Commission and the federations don’t have any role to play (in their deployment). The secretaries are government appointees because the federations are autonomous,” he said.
He said the affected officials will be given two to three months to effect the handover notes.
He said the reforms “will also be another avenue for the federation to create job vacancies for Nigerians’
During the Presidential Sports Retreat, which held in October 2012, sports management and administration was said to be the greatest problem of Nigerian Sports ahead of funding.
