Shittu reportedly told Keshi that he would prefer to fight for a promotion ticket to the English Premier League with his team rather than gun for the Africa Cup of Nations trophy with Nigeria.
The Media Officer of the Eagles, Ben Alaiya, revealed Saturday morning from Portugal that the big defender put a call through to the Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi, asking to be left out of the team as earlier suggested by his club Manager, Kenny Jacket.
According to Alaiya, Shittu told the Big Boss he would like to be around for his team in January when the race for promotion tickets to the English Premier League will be fierce and so will not be available to don the green and white jersey.
“Shittu called the Big Boss and asked to be left out and so the two of them had a gentleman agreement , it was just quite unfortunate that the defender who has shown so much commitment during national team assignment will be rejecting a maiden call from Keshi who is one of his mentors,” Alaiya enthused.
The decision of Shittu, who has stared for Premier League teams like QPR, Watford and Bolton Wanderers, has been respected and he is no longer expected to join the Super Eagles for the African Cup of Nations in January.
