The Minister wants to have direct oversight of the stadia
The Nigerian Sports Minister, Bolaji Abdullahi, has moved his office to the National stadium in Abuja.
Mr. Abdullahi, who recently arrived from the just concluded Sports Festival in Lagos, moved his office from the Federal Secretariat Complex to an office very close to the main bowl of the National Stadium.
When PREMIUM TIMES contacted the Special Adviser on Media to the Minister, Julius Ogunro, he gave the reasons for the minister’s actions.
“The Minister decided to move his office to the National Stadium because as a Sports Ministry, our business is solely at the Stadium, He decided to move closer here to supervise and at the same time encourage people to come to the stadium more often,” Mr. Ogunro said.
He stated further that “the facilities here are withering and with the presence of the Minister at the stadium, adequate care will be taken; like cutting of the grass, ensuring everything is been put in place.”
Already, the immediate vicinity of the stadium, which weeks ago looked haggard with overgrown bushes, appears very serene; with the bushes and grasses well trimmed.
The Sports Ministry recently defended its budget before the National Assembly. About N1 billion has been set aside for maintenance of the six National Stadia in Abuja, Lagos, Ibadan, Kaduna, Bauchi and Enugu.
