Mr. Baribote was asked to step aside for three weeks to allow for investigations into alleged misappropriation of funds.
Embattled chairman of the board of Nigerian Premier League, NPL, Rumson Baribote, has been asked to step aside for three weeks to allow for investigations into an alleged misappropriation of funds by members of the NPL’s board.
This decision was taken at the just concluded board meeting of the NPL, Monday evening in Abuja.
A three man committee has been set up to investigate the allegations against the leadership of the NPL board.
Members of the committee include, Leye adepoju (an executive board member of the Nigeria Football Federation); Ade Ojeikere, a journalist; and Kasali Obanoyen, a staff of the Nigerian Premier League.
It has been a topsy turvy twirl for Mr. Baribote’s, who was on December 5, stripped of the leadership of the NPL with the NPL’s board dissolution.
In a turn of events, two days later, on December 7, the board was re-instated, with Mr. Baribote remaining at the helm of leadership.
Barely three days later, Mr. Baribote, was again asked to step aside for three weeks pending the outcome of the investigation.
Speaking to PREMIUM TIMES, Mr. Baribote said “as a leader you have to take responsibility, there are so many issues accusations and all of that and I decided that, okay I want the whole world to know that if I am guilty or not,
“There are prices to pay, as a leader, I want to be transparent, let them do whatever it Is that they want to do, in three weeks time, we will know the truth,” he said.
The acting chairman of the Nigeria premier league, Shehu Gusau, who spoke with PREMIUM TIMES said “We have to look at it from both angle.
“We put people that are experienced to look into it; from there we will know what next step to take.”
This decision implies a setback for the NPL’s congress as it will now be on hold till findings from the investigations are revealed.
