Lagos male and female teams won their first football matches.

The football event of the 18th National Sports Festival, Monday, got underway 24 hours before the official Opening Ceremony with Team Lagos recording convincing wins in both the male and female football events.

While the Lagos male team were 2-0 winners in their group opener with Katsina, the female team were more ruthless, netting in six unreplied goals against their Kaduna counterparts.

Ayomileke Solomon and Jacob Othuke were the goals scorers in the Team Lagos (male) victory.

In other fixtures in the male football event Adamawa and Abia football teams failed to turn up for their game against Plateau and Delta respectively

In the some of the games in the female football event, Team Osun came from behind to defeat Benue 2-1 while Edo also recorded a similar 2-1 win over Team Imo and it was also the same for Akwa Ibom who defeated Taraba, 2-1.

Speaking with PREMIUM TIMES after her side’s win, head coach of the Lagos female football team, Ann Echijine, said this is what she considers the best possible start adding that the target remains winning the gold medal.

“I am really happy with my girls; the result shows how much hard work we have been doing. We played series of friendly matches that allow me to see where the lapses are and how much work we still have ahead of us,” the former Super Falcons goalkeeper said.
