Osaze’s West Brom overtake Chelsea after Sunderland win

Osaze Odemwingie

This season is the best start ever for West Brom in the Premier League. The fine run of Osaze Odemwingie’s West Bromwich Albion in the English Premier League continued Saturday as the Baggies secured an invaluable 4-2 away win over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

The win means West Brom have overtaken Chelsea on the 3rd spot as they now have 26 points from 13 games.

Chelsea with 24 points from 12 games now have an uphill task of beating reigning Champions, Manchester City, on Sunday to return to their previously occupied position.

In Saturday’s game, a Zoltan Gera stunner from outside the box gave West Brom the lead on the half hour mark. With few minutes left in the first half, Shey Long was gifted an easy goal off a poor ball handling by Sunderland goalkeeper, Simon Mignolet.

On resumption of the second half, both teams pressed for more goals, but it was the home team that was rewarded in the 73rd as a free kick by Craig Gardner was deflected into the net.

Substitute, Romeo Lukaku, again ensured that West Brom kept their two goal lead as he converted calmly a penalty kick awarded after his teammate was brought down in the box. Sunderland were not going to accept defeat without a fight as Benin International, Stephane Sessegnon, reduced the deficit again netting his second goal of the season with four minutes left n the clock as scores stood at 3-2.

While the Cats threw everything forward to secure at least a point in the Saturday early kick off fixture, they were punished in extra time as Marc-Antoine Fortune sealed the win for the Baggies who are enjoying their best ever start to the season in the elite division.
