UEFA Champions League: Arsenal, Milan through to next phase, Man. City out

Manchester City have again failed to make it beyond the first round.

Arsenal, Wednesday, sealed their place in the knock-out phase of the UEFA Champions League after a 2-0 victory over John Utaka’s French team, Monterpellier. The Gunners join Manchester United as the other English team through to the next phase of Europe’s biggest club competition.

Goals from Jack Wilshere and Lukas Podolski ensured Wenger’s men do the traditional thing of making it to the knock out stage.

It was however not the same for the other English team, Manchester City, who were also on parade on Wednesday as 10 man Real Madrid held on for the last 16 minutes to play out a 1-1 draw at the Etihad stadium .

The result meant that Madrid qualify for the knockout phase, while Man City were eliminated from the competition in the same stage they reached last time out.

Karim Benzema gave Real Madrid the lead in the 10th minute, when he skipped past Maicon, to connect a flighted Angel di Maria pass.

Manchester City equalised on 74 minutes when Sergio Aguero put away a penalty. Alvaro Arbeola was booked and sent off for the penalty, when he hauled Aguero down in the box.

In other venues, AC Milan put behind their poor domestic form as they secured an away 3-1 victory over Anderlect to secure a place in the last 16. Little Pharaoh, El-Sharawy, Alex Mexes and Pato were the goal scorers for the San Siro giants. Malaga’s 2-2 away draw with Zenith St Petersburg nonetheless still sealed their place in the knock out phase.

Also, in Ukraine, big spenders PSG put an end to the Champions League dream of Nigerian trio, Brown Ideye, Taye Taiwo, and Lukman Haruna as Dynamo Keiv went down 2- 0 at home.

Wins for Porto, Schalke and Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday also meant they progress in this season’s Champions League competition.
