Nov.1 (PREMIUM TIMES) — President Goodluck Jonathan will Saturday lead the flag hoisting ceremony for the 18th National Sports Festival tagged Eko 2012.
The event, which holds at Teslim Balogun Stadium Surulere Lagos, will also have the 36 States Governors and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.
According to the Secretary General, Local Organising Secretary, LOC, Kweku Tandoh, the event symbolizes the participation of all the federating units that make up Nigeria in the forthcoming 18th National Sports Festival.
“On Saturday November 3, Governor of Lagos State, Babatunde Fashola, would be hosting Mr. President and all the other State Governors at the flag hoisting ceremony. The significance of this is to confirm the participation of all the states and to show that the festival is principally about the unity of Nigeria as one entity”, Mr. Tandoh said.
He said that about eleven thousand five hundred athletes are expected for the sporting fiesta from across the nation.
“Based on initial registration figures, we had envisaged a maximum number of 11,500 athletes but now that zonal eliminations have taken place with some state teams eliminated, we expect the number to drop. By the end of the Delegation Registration Meeting (DRM), on the 13th of November we would have the exact figure for athletes and officials,” Mr Tandoh said.
In the wake of the event, officials of the Main Organizing Committee of the Sports festival led by Abba Yolah of the National Sports Commission went on the final inspection tour of the facility to be used for the games.
Some of the venues visited during Thursday’s inspection exercise include the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, National Stadium, Rowe Park, Tafawa Balewa Cricket Ovals, Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, the University of Lagos and other venues earmarked to host various event during the country’s biggest sporting show-piece.
The Commissioner of Sports in Lagos Waheed Enitan-Oshodi on Thursday also assured that Lagos is ready for the festival adding that the target by the State is to host the best National Sports Festival.
The 18th National Sport Festival dubbed EKO 2012 will commence on November 27 and run through December 9.
