It now seems a routine for Nigerian teams to be poorly treated by their African hosts.
The Golden Eaglets arrived Conakry, the Guinean capital, on Friday, ahead of Sunday’s U-17 African Junior Championship second-leg qualifier
The team, who flew ASKY Airlines from Cotonou, landed at the Conakry Aeroport International at 5:15p.m. local time(6:15p.m. Nigerian time) and was received by Nigerian Embassy officials, led by S. A Muhammed, the Charge D’ Affairs; and M.D Umar, the Consular officer.
The Golden Eaglets were also welcomed by Nigerian football fans who drummed and sang to welcome them.
Another shoddy treatment
Meanwhile, the shoddy treatment being meted to Nigerian teams abroad continued with the Guinea Football Federation (FEGUIFOOT) Practically abandoning the Nigerian contingent. No official of the federation was at the airport to welcome the Nigerian team.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that earlier the Guinean federation had misinformed the Nigeria Football Federation that the Eaglets’ scheduled Friday flight to Conakry had been cancelled.
The NFF had fully prepared for any antics by FEGUIFOOT officials who were reportedly well catered for when they came for their away game in Calabar a fortnight ago. Then, the Nigeria federation also paid for one week of accommodation and feeding when the Guineans could not meet up with their flight logistics, an official said.
Prior to the Eaglets Conakry trip, The NFF made arrangements with the Nigerian Embassy to provide Nigerian delicacies much to the delight of the players.
“Be rest assured that you are going to eat Nigerian food and we have made all the arrangements because we don’t want you to lack anything,” Muazu Suleiman, NFF board member and leader of delegation said.
Suleiman, who is the chairman of the NFF referees’ committee, described as appalling and unfortunate the unkind gesture of FEGUIFOOT.
“The attitude of the Guinean FA is unfortunate and we didn’t expect this from them with all what we did for them when they were in Nigeria,” he stated.”We always play the big brother to all teams with good welfare but it is unfortunate that they don’t reciprocate such gesture to us but we are not going to be distracted.”
The team is lodged at Riviera Taouyah Hotel at the instance of the Nigerian Embassy and NFF.
The Super Falcons and the Super Eagles had suffered similar experiences at the hands of their hosts.
