Nigeria’s female U-17 team, the Flamingoes, Saturday, secured their ticket to the quarter finals of the ongoing female World Cup in Azerbaijan, as they coasted to a 3-0 victory over their Colombian counterparts in one of the final Group A games decided.
The victory saw Nigeria finish top in the Group as the 1-0 victory secured by Canada over host Azerbaijan saw them finish behind Nigeria. Both teams, Nigeria and Canada qualified with seven points each, but the Flamingoes topped the group with a superior goals difference having defeated Azerbaijan 11-0.
Two strikes from Ayinde in the 31st and 71st minute, and an own goal from a Colombian defender confirmed Nigeria’s place in the quarter finals.
The flamingoes will face European bigwigs, France, in the knockout stage.
To book a place in the quarter finals, France were ruthless in their last group game as they fired in ten goals in their 10-2 demolition of one of Africa’s representatives, Gambia.
Nigeria has never made it beyond the quarter final at the FIFA U-17 female world Cup, but Coach Peter Dedevbo has maintained that surpassing the quarter final feat is his minimum target.
Meanwhile, Ghana the third African team in Azerbaijan, will on Sunday take to the pitch to fight for a place in the quarter finals.
Flamingoes striker, Chinwe Ihezuo, remains top scorer and has promised to continue scoring as she has her eyes on the Golden boot.
