The Eko Festival, scheduled to hold from September 27 to 30, will host ex-international footballers such as Nwankwo Kanu, Christian Karembu of France, and Bryan Robson of England.
Entertainers expected to perform at the festival include Sasha, Naeto C, Whiz Kid and many more.
The Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, Seyi Akinwunmi, said on Thursday, that the objective of the Eko Football Festival is to create a platform for the convergence of football and entertainment.
Mr. Akinwunmi said the objective of the tournament, to be held at the Eko Football Arena, Lekki, is to win back football lovers in the state to match venues.
“We have a vision; part of that vision is the convergence of football and entertainment because many young people these days do not go to the stadium any more.
“That is part of our football problems in Nigeria but when you hear that Naeto C, or Whiz Kid or Sasha is playing at the stadium the whole place is full. So we decided to bring these people to the stadium and then, they watch football and bit by bit they will start coming back to the stadium,” he said.
Sasha, a female rap musician, described the festival as a brilliant initiative, adding that it would create jobs and attract tourists.
“It’s a fantastic thing to do, it’s going to create jobs, it’s going to be a tourist attraction and more people are going to hear about Lagos,” Sasha said.
The festival will feature teams from U-13 and U-17 categories, among which are the youth teams of Portsmouth FC of England.
