Fayose returns to PDP

Ayo Fayose, former governor of Ekiti state, who left the PDP under controversial circumstances has been welcomed back.

The impeached former governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has been re-admitted into the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the party ratified the re-admission on Wednesday, Olisa Metuh, its spokesman said in a statement.

The decision, according to the statement, which takes effect from September 14, was reached at the end of the 315th regular meeting of the party’s NWC.

The PDP also approved a waiver for Mr. Fayose in line with the provision of the party’s constitution with effect from September 14, 2011.

“By this action, Dr. Fayose is cleared to enjoy all rights and privileges of a member of the PDP without let or hindrance,’’ Mr. Metuh said.

Mr. Fayose left the PDP in controversial circumstances after he was impeached as governor in 2006. The Ekiti politician was a former ally of former President Olusegun Obasanjo until he was impeached. He became a sworn enemy of the former president, publicly accusing Mr. Obasanjo of being behind the failure and crisis in the PDP in the South West. He is still being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for corrupt actions while in office.

Mr. Fayose became a sworn enemy of former Ekiti State Governor, Segun Oni, and openly campaigned against the latter’s re-election. His declaration of support for the candidate of the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, Kayode Fayemi, contributed to the latter’s victory against the incumbent PDP governor.

He latter decamped to the Labour Party after falling out with the ACN leadership in Ekiti. He contested the Ekiti Central senatorial election in 2011 which he lost to the incumbent, Babafemi Ojudu of the ACN.

Still a popular politician in Ekiti, Mr. Fayose’s re-entry may be a signal that the PDP is bent on re-gaining its feet in the Ekiti and the South West region after it lost states it controlled to the ACN.

It is however not clear how Mr. Fayose would work with former governor, Segun Oni, who is still the leader of the PDP in Ekiti.
