The governorship campaign of the Ondo State All Progressives Congress, has suffered another setback, as an aspirant, Ajayi Boroffice, on Friday, dissociated himself from a press statement credited to him, which declared his support for Rotimi Akeredolu, the party’s candidate.
A widely circulated press statement on Thursday purportedly signed by Mr. Boroffice, quoted him as accepting the verdict of APC’s National Working Committee which upheld Mr. Akeredolu’s election as the party’s candidate.
He was also quoted in the statement to have declared his total support for the lawyer. He also urged all his supporters to make themselves and their resources available to the candidate in the effort to win the next governorship election in the state.
The spokesman for the Akeredolu campaign group, Yemi Olowolabi, told PREMIUM TIMES on Friday that the statement was a product of series of meetings between Messrs. Boroffice and Akeredolu which started on Sunday.
“It is unfortunate that we are seeing a rebuts,” he said. “That is the kind of politics we are seeing here, where we see people speak from both sides of the mouth.”
Mr. Olowolabi denied writing the statement or knowing who did.
“But what I can tell you is that the statement came out from the meeting held between the two groups and both of them were supposed to hold the press conference on Wednesday, but that did not happen,” he said.
But Mr. Boroffice, a senator who represents Ondo North senatorial district, said the statement did not emanate from him.
Speaking through his media aide, Kayode Fakuyi, Mr. Boroffice said he did not address any press conference on Wednesday as claimed by the statement.
“The Media Office of Professor Ajayi Boroffice, OON has noted with utmost consternation a press statement that was purportedly issued by the senator representing Ondo North senatorial district, Prof. Ajayi Boroffice on Wednesday, 12th of October, 2016,” Mr. Fakuyi said.
“The said press statement, which appeared to have been circulated on the social media by its originators, did not emanate from Prof. Boroffice.
“It should also be noted that the senator did not address any press conference on Wednesday.
“By this statement, I wish to draw a line and detach Prof. Boroffice from the views and admonitions expressed in the said press statement.
“It bears repeating that Prof. Boroffice remains one of the founding fathers of the All Progressives Congress in Nigeria and a loyal leader of the party in Ondo State.
“However, that does not confer any modicum of privilege to any person or group to write whatever press statement they like and falsely present it to the public as views of Prof. Boroffice,” the statement said.
Mr. Fakuyi, however told PREMIUM TIMES that the senator’s media did not want to react immediately it saw the statement, as Mr. Boroffice had a good relationship with Mr. Akeredolu.
He said the denial became necessary given the wide publicity given to the statement and its attendant misrepresentation of the true position of the senator.
