Fire ravages Ogun market

A late night fire on Tuesday ravaged parts of the popular Oba Lipede market and shopping mall located in Kuto area of Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, destroying 16 shops and goods worth millions of naira.

The fire started at about 10.00p.m. after all shops had closed. The cause of the blaze was not known as at the time of this report.

A witness said fire fighters who arrived the scene could not stop the inferno, as they complained of water shortage.

By Wednesday, smouldering parts of the damaged building and goods littered the ground, as shop owners lamented their losses.

The leader of the traders’ union, Ismaitu Adewuyi, told our correspondent that properties would have been saved if fire fighters arrived early enough.

She appealed to the state government to assist those whose goods were destroyed.
