Lagos mustn’t be governed by federal ruling party – Agbaje

Jimi Agbaje

The Lagos gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Jimi Agbaje, has criticized the Lagos All Progressive Congress and its gubernatorial candidate, Akinwumi Ambode, for pushing the idea that Lagos needs to be governed by a federal ruling party, to ensure the state is denied of funds.

Both the Lagos APC and the Akinwumi Ambode Campaign organisation had campaigned that an APC-led federal and state government will birth faster development in the state while also pitting the Igbos – who are backing the PDP candidate in Lagos against Yorubas.

Reacting to the assumption that Lagos would be deprived of funds if PDP wins, Mr. Agbaje, in a statement published on his Facebook, accused the APC of doublespeak.

He pointed that the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, in his speech last week promised to run an all-encompassing government.

“First, I wonder about the soundness of this argument especially after listening to President-elect General Buhari’s acceptance speech where he clearly stated “There shall no longer be a ruling party again… We shall never rule over the people as if they were subservient to government” This basically spoke to our better-angels as a people and our sense of community as Nigerians. If so, then where’s the logic in the argument,” Mr Agbaje said.

He asked if the APC led federal government intends to run a vindictive, partial or insensitive government.

“Is APC LAGOS by the nature of this “aligning Lagos to the center” statement, now inferring that General Buhari intends to run a vindictive, partial or insensitive government? Well, that’s not for me to answer and it’s clearly not the focus of this piece. What I know, however, is that Lagos has always made progress in spite of being in the opposition and right now it will be to the benefit of democracy and the whole country to have a watchful police, as opposed to both power houses – Lagos & Abuja concentrated in one party.

“In fact, if my memory of history serves me well, Lagos and the FG have never been in the same party. Our development as a state is as a result of our ingenuity, tenacity and drive as a people. And it’s clear that Lagosians can see through this total botch of logic,” he stated.

Mr. Agbaje reminded the APC that despite Lagos being on the opposition with the federal government, the state has continue to thrive and it would not change if he gets elected.

“During late Pa’ Awo’s time, the Action Group led Lagos while the NCNC led the FG. In 1979 up until 1983, LK Jakande’s achievements were under UPN even though President Shagari was in NPN. In 1992 Governor Otedola was NRC and SDP led the FG before the JUNE 12 annulment. In 1999 Tinubu was AD, FG was PDP. In 2007-2011, his Excellency, Governor Fashola was AC/ACN/APC while the FG led by Yar’Adua was PDP.

“Under Yar’Adua, the FG released withheld funds to Lagos that had been blocked by his predecessor despite being in opposing parties with Governor Fashola. You see, our edge as a state has always being about our collective ability to stay ahead of the curve with our without favour from the FG” Agbaje said.

I think Oba of Lagos is right in advising Ndigbos to fall in line with the wishes of the indigenous people to maintain development in Lagos, having read of what the PDP candidate is saying is wrong. To be with the central ruling party camp is very helpful for development in Lagos State more so especially now that the foundation for the Central Government started in Lagos and they should be allowed to enjoy the sweat of their labour in APC.

      Very good point!

  • Preco01

This Agbaje man has a lot of problems, one of which he doesn’t even know what he wants. Agbaje you claimed in London that ND militants will destroy oil pipelines and hold Nigeria to ransom if Buhari wins, now what is all this nonsense you are spewing about Lagos not to be governed by same party as that in the Federal level? is this man serious? seriously? Lagos has been dying to have the compliment of federal might for 16 years! I don’t think this man Agbaje has the love of Lagosians at heart.

    • Tunsj

Couldn’t agree more. He promised to deliver Lagos State to Jonathan in the last election and he failed. Agbaje has the love of Dollars at heart.

Either way, the yorubas would win. If Lagos becomes PDP, that means the major strength of the opposition party would be here. They want to create another Yoruba national leader. Thanks guys, you’re too kind.
While you’re helping us get a firm grip of national politics, once in a while remember your own land and help them also .

Agbaje is really confused. Point of correction, Lagos was majorly NCNC with places like Ikorodu, Badagry and Lagos Island in its firm grip early in the first republic. Like in many other Western Region towns, the story changed in reaction to the perceived victimization of Awo from 1962 till the conviction for treasonable felony. If Agbaje could admit that Lagos had fared well under previous administrations then his aspiration is called to question, it really gives vent to the allegation that he wants to experiment and Lagos can ill afford that. If Lagos fared well as an opposition state, it should fare excellently under a ruling government party

  • Lagosion

PDP cant govern Lagos, not now not in the future, show me one among the PDP governor in other states that can compete with Fashola achievements so far ? so because PDP shares N500 notes to some hungry lagosians at the polling units in the last presidential elections and got some votes in Lagos they believed they can win Lagos??? Lagos remain miniature Nigeria and cant be send backward by PDP’s OPC. NEVER…

  • SAM .A

The only thing Agbaje has is good English, experience is zero, his political sagacity is also zero, how will he now substantiate that the militants in Niger Delta will cut off or destroy oil well / pipelines if Jonathan loose election.
Now Jona has lost. He himself is about to loose for this poor judgment .

    • Tunsj

      You said it all.

    • Ola Alani

Same type of good English as idiotic FFK. Grammar cannot translate to success.

  • MushinSpeaks

JK is not truthful o his word; this is same man that asked Lagosians to vote the party that governs at the top. Having realised GEJ’s loss, he is shifting his mouth; shows he has no good plan for LAGOS State, he is just banking on goodwill. Shame on him and his party

  • Charlotte

GMB will not run a vindictive type of government for he is a fair man. But JK will not my our choice for governor. he is always contradicting himself.

    • Ola Alani

JK is an inexperienced, visionless, flip-flopping person with no record of public service. No room for novice in Lagos.
