The commencement of the campaign of Seyi Makinde, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Oyo State, was marred by violence in Ibadan on Monday.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the programme, which was held at the Mapo Hall, ended abruptly when suspected political thugs attacked those gathered at the event.
Tear gas canisters were shot into the air by policemen to disperse the crowd as the violence was becoming uncontrollable.
A NAN correspondent, who was at the scene, gathered that security personnel told the governorship candidate to leave the scene of the programme.
NAN reported that several persons were wounded while some properties were also destroyed.
Among those affected was the African Independent Television (AIT) cameraman whose car was badly damaged by the hoodlums.
The casualty figure in the incident was, however, unknown as at the time of filing this report.
Mr. Makinde, who spoke earlier, had assured the people of the state of stable and constant electricity if elected.
“I have immense expertise in this area. The idea is to provide stable electricity in all nooks and crannies of Oyo State and by so doing create a stable industrial axis to stem rural-urban migration,’’ he said.(NAN)
