A last minute power tussle has led to the cancellation of the House of Assembly primaries of the Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, scheduled for Saturday.
The chairman of the PDP electoral panel for the primaries, Akeem Animasaun, when contacted midnight confirmed that the primaries had been cancelled.
Mr. Animasaun, who affirmed that he was appointed to oversee the proposed primaries, said he was yet to be given the delegates’ list and documents with which he would use to conduct the primaries.
He said the cancellation might be as a result of crisis in the party, which, he said, would soon be resolved.
“Not until the leadership irons out the crisis, the primaries would not hold,” he said. “They did not tell me why they have not handed over the documents to me. However, any primaries held in Ogun tomorrow is null and void because I am the chairman of the elections.”
The party has been hit by power wars among several groups within it.
The party structure was in the hands of party financier, Kashamu Buruji, but, several attempts were reportedly being made to take it over by other groups including a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, among others.
Meanwhile, the delegates’ list at the House of Assembly primaries would determine the group that would produce the governorship candidate for the party.
