The Ogun police said it also recovered some weapons from the suspects.
Five suspected armed robbers were on Saturday shot dead by the Ogun State
Police Command during a gun duel at Agbado town located in Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
The Ogun police spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the incident to PREMIUM TIMES in Abeokuta, said that the 12-member gang were carrying out a robbery operation when they were caught.
He added that the robbers engaged the police in the gun duel that left five thieves dead, one arrested and others escaping with bullets wounds
“The Police Anti Crime Team attached to Agbado Division of Ogun State, responding to a distress call,on Saturday 26th July, engaged some armed robbers numbering twelve (12) in a gun battle at Oluke, Okugbolu and Onireke areas of Agbado at about 0620hrs leaving five of the robbers dead while one of them was arrested with their weapons and others fled with bullet wounds,” Mr. Adejobi explained.
He said the armed robbers had launched an attack on the people of these areas when a call was made to the Divisional Police Officer in Agbado Division who then put a call to alert his officers on routine patrol to go to the area where the robbers were caught in the act.
Mr. Adejobi said that in the process of combing the area, members of the vigilante service of Ogun State helped the police officers.
He said the arrested suspect resides at Ijoko Otta town of the state, is a top
member of the robbery gang, and would help the police get the fleeing
members of the gang.
He said items recovered from the robbers include five locally made guns,30 live cartridges,12 expended cartridges,3 laptops, jewellery, money, 5 unregistered motorcycles, cutlasses and charms.
Mr. Adejobi said the Commissioner of Police, Ikemefuna Okoye, commended the people of the area, the police operatives and the vigilante men who carried out the successful operation.
