“In the process of trying to defend myself, Honourable Arowele moved towards me and slapped me.”
A contractor handling projects in the Ondo State House of Assembly, Obayoriju Abass, on Thursday accused a state lawmaker, Ayo Arowele, of assault.
Mr. Abass said he was assaulted by the lawmaker, who represents Owo State Constituency I, at a meeting summoned by the Assembly tender’s committee.
He also accused the lawmaker of instructing his ‘boys’ to molest him. He said his cloth was torn by the boys who pushed him out of the meeting.
“I went to a meeting summoned by the tender’s committee but I was surprised that despite the fact I answered the questions the committee asked me correctly I was asked to shut up,” he said.
“In the process of trying to defend myself, Honourable Arowele moved towards me and slapped me. He later instructed his thugs to work me out of the meeting. One of his thugs tore my cloth and slapped me severally.
“I think what Arowele and his boys did to me is something that should not be allowed to go. Such attack is barbaric and uncalled for,” he added.
The victim, who said he reported the case to the police, threatened to sue the lawmaker, saying, “I will not hesitate to drag Arowele to court because what he did to me is uncivilized.”
He also called on the police to investigate the matter because the lawmaker threatened to get rid of him.
In a swift reaction, Mr. Arowele described the allegation as a blatant lie targeted at destroying his image.
“It is sad that people have to be mischievous, the allegations … are nothing but a lie coming from a great liar,” he said.
PREMIUM TIMES learnt that Mr. Abass is interested in vying for the lawmaker’s seat in the Assembly, both men are from the same constituency, a situation that had caused dispute between them.
