The Abeokuta-Lagos road was blocked by the rampaging fighters.
Obada-Oko Community in Ewekoro local government of Ogun State was on Friday turned into a battle ground as land speculators and youth engaged themselves in a bloody clash over land in the area.
The Abeokuta-Lagos road was blocked by the rampaging fighters, forcing motorists to make a detour and search for alternative routes.
PREMIUM TIMES gathered that a popular land speculator and his thugs had stormed Obada-Oko to execute a land judgment, but met stiff resistance from the youth of the community, a situation which soon degenerated.
A resident of the area, Ayinla Omowura, said, “The problem had to do with land. Last night, they (the land speculator and his crew) had entered into the town to pick some landlords, whose current whereabouts are known. Again, this morning, they arrived and blocked the expressway. As a result, the youth of this community fought back and everybody started
running helter-skelter. The police came and some people were arrested.”
When PREMIUM TIMES visited the scene, a crucial stakeholders’ meeting with the chiefs of the town and the police Area Commanders from Abeokuta and Sango was on-going.
Several mobile policemen were seen stationed in strategic places within the community and environs to checkmate further escalation of the crisis.
When contacted, the Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said the police moved into the community when some protesters blocked the expressway breaking law and order. He said the protesters were dispersed with tear gas and nine persons were arrested during the crisis.
