Tinubu vs. Obanikoro: Lagos PDP vows to defend its members

Lagos PDP frowned at Mr. Tinubu’s attack on Musiliu Obanikoro.

Following the exchange of words between former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, and the Minister of State for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro, the Lagos State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has vowed to repel any action aimed at blackmailing or attacking any of its members.

Mr. Tinubu had criticised Mr. Obanikoro for spending more time in Ekiti, where Mr. Tinubu’s party recently lost a governorship election to the PDP, than in Chibok where over 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped almost three months ago, and remain missing.

A statement issued on Thursday in Lagos by the spokesperson of PDP in Lagos, Taofik Gani, described Mr. Tinubu’s statement on the minister as “not only irrational, but a clear sign of a frustrated, diseased blackmailer and desperate emperor who wants to hold on to southwest and Lagos State in particular.”

“On our part, we shall not underestimate the desperation of Tinubu. We, however, promise him that no hatchet plot against any of our members shall prosper,” Mr. Gani stated.

The Lagos State PDP asked. Tinubu to come to terms with ‘the new political realities’ in the Southwest and Lagos in particular.

“One of such is to accept the expiration of his control and the political superiority of Senator Obanikoro to defeat him in a free and fair election,” Mr. Gani said.

He said the All Progressives Congress, APC, chieftain would be held responsible if any of PDP’s leaders, followers or governorship hopefuls were again murdered.

Funsho Williams, a PDP Governorship aspirant, was murdered in his home in July 2006. After eight years imprisonment, six suspects implicated in his murder were freed by a Lagos High Court on Monday.

“By the unwarranted public outburst of Tinubu attacking the person of Senator Obanikoro, our party member, we can now see that the frustration, desperation and drowning-man’s attitude has reached an embarrassing crescendo. This is a long awaited required proof to confirm reports of Lagos APC clandestine meetings to blackmail, implicate, or physically attack Lagos PDP members as we approach 2015 election which Tinubu is jittery to lose,” Mr. Gani alleged.

The PDP said it was confident the party would unseat APC in Lagos following the last local government elections in Lagos, where Mr. Obanikoro’s son, Ibrahim Babajide, defeated the APC at Mr. Tinubu’s local government, before the victory was upturned by the court based on technicalities.
